Bio:

Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. was born in Mount Vernon, New York. His first paid acting role was in a summer stock theater stage production, "Wings of the Morning.” He made his first big screen appearance in Carbon Copy (1981) with George Segal. Through the 1980s, he worked in both movies and television, and in 1989, his film career began to take precedence when he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Tripp in Glory (1989). He has been known to portray real-life figures in films such as Malcolm X in Malcolm X (1992) and Melvin B. Tolson in The Great Debaters (2007), as well as tough, no-nonsense heroes in films like Crimson Tide (1995) and Out of Time (2003). He has directed various films, including Antwone Fisher (2002) and The Great Debaters (2007), and inn 2010, Washington headlined as an actor and producer in the post-Apocalyptic drama The Book of Eli (2010). His notable roles since then have been in Flight (2012), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, Safe House (2012), and The Equalizer (2014). In 2016, Washington was selected as the recipient for the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards.
